European capital for education: Slovakia
Slovakia is one of the few EU countries that attracts foreign students granting a temporary residence permit (RP) for the entire period of study, with the possibility of employment. Students can officially get a job and earn extra income covering the cost of food and accommodation, this also gives the opportunity to travel across the EU, attend mass cultural events, excursions and the like, and this is one of the easiest ways to officially immigrate into the European Union.
As of 2015, Slovakia has more than 20 public and about 10 private universities. One of the most popular among foreign students is Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. Students are also willing to enter Comenius University, Slovak Technical University and Slovak Medical University located in Bratislava, Žilina University in Žilina and other. These universities provide three levels of higher education. Bachelor's degree covers three years of study, master's degree or engineer's degree cover two years of study after the bachelor degree, a degree of a doctor of medicine covers 3-4 years of study, depending on the special field. The degrees are awarded in accordance with the pan-European ECTS system, based on the results of tests passed at the end of the study. For example, to get a bachelor's degree you need to score more than 175 points (credits). Applicants from Ukraine, Russia and other CIS countries, after graduating from school and having a certificate of secondary education can apply only for the bachelor's degree, and students with a bachelor's degree, master or specialist degree (awarded in other countries) can apply for the master's level. Doctoral training accepts only the master's degrees awarded by a European university.
In order to enter a Slovak University it is necessary to know the Slovak language, as the teaching at most faculties is in it. Exceptions are such faculties as international relations, translators, etc, which require English or German. We offer to learn the Slovak language at the training courses accredited by the Ministry of Education of Slovakia; after their graduation you will receive a state standard certificate of language knowledge. The educational and training center at Slovak State University of Matej Bel, located in Banska Bystrica, offers two training programs for Russian-speaking students, the details of which can be found in the training courses section.
Preparation of documents to enter a university in Slovakia
Another obligatory condition for admission is the procedure of nostrification of the domestic document on education in the Ministry of Education of Slovakia. These include: certificate of secondary education, diploma, certificate of courses completion and their supplements. These documents must be pre apostilled in the Ministry of Education of the issuing country. Then, these documents must be translated by the Slovak certified translator in Slovakia, then comes the process of nostrification directly at the chosen university.
The information on admission conditions, examples of the entrance examinations, as well as the list of the required documents can be found on the website of the selected university or faculty. This information is annually updated. There are some faculties which admit without entrance examinations on the basis of the certificate of completion of training courses accredited by the Ministry of Education of Slovakia. There are some faculties which decide on the entrance exams based on the number of the registered applications, if there is a large number of applications, there are exams, if here is not enough, they are canceled.
Special fields with many applicants admit students solely according to the results of the entrance examinations. In most of the cases private universities do not have exams, except for such faculties as medical or international relations. Entrance examinations are held in the form of tests: 80-110 questions with 2-3 possible answers to decide, lasting for 80-120 minutes. You can get acquainted with the list of questions included in the tests, in the books published by the faculties before the beginning of the admission campaign (usually 2-2.5 months before the exams). While studying at the training courses there are given a few hours a week to learn the questions for the entrance exams. Teachers will help to deal with unclear questions and will improve knowledge in the required areas.
In most of the cases, enrollees registering two or three applications for admission, one of which is for special field or faculty, which does not provide entrance exams than guaranteeing enrollment. The "Fallback" cannot meet all the wishes of the applicant, but it gives the opportunity of free education in a European university, and the opportunity to transfer to the desired major in future.
